OCPQS 3/81: "Ordered that the Sheriff Summon three Justices of the Peace & four Freeholders owners of Slaves to meet in at the Court House in Hillsborough on Friday next in order to Try James a Negroe man Slave the property of Henry McCoy on suspicion of his having Poisoned a Negroe the property of Rich'd Thomas. Ordered that Henry McCoy be bound in the sum of Five hundred pounds for the personal appearance of his Negroe Fellow James at the Court-House in Hillsborough on Friday next to answer such things as shall be objected against him, and that he do not depart without leave of the Court."

OCPQS 3/192: "December 19, 1780 State of North Carolina, Orange County. At a Court called to examine and enquire into the Cause of four Black Persons, being Soldies, vizt Thomas Thompson, Leonard Turner, Valentine Murrin & John Adams, each of whom gave in their Respective Names, being committed concerning a Robbery acted in the House of Joseph Hastings - They being arraigned, and under Examination, By Order of Capt. or rather Major McIntosh were forcibly rescued from the Court, contrary to the Civil Law & power of this State, while the Justices Alex Mebane Esq, Wm McCauley Esq + Jno Nichols Esq were present. NB the Delinquents said they were of the Maryland Line. Decem 20, 1780 Application being in a regular manner made to Colo. Gunby Com at Hillsborough, the Said Delinquents supposed to be Robbers, were with Freedom given up to the civil Power, to be dealt with agreeable tot eh Laws of this State. Test, Joshua Potts, CC."

OCPQS 3/193: "State of North Carolina, Orange County December 23, 1780. At a Court called to examine John Adams, on States Evidence, relative to a Robbery acted in the House of Joseph Hastings, of said County, on the Night of the 15th Instate, Present Wm McCauley Esq., Jno Nichols Esq., & William Courtney Esq. The said John Adams being sworn & examined agreeable to Law - according to whose *Evidence it appears that on the aforesaid Night a certain Leonard Turner, Thomas Thompson & Valentine Murrin, Soldiers in the Maryland Line, being black, but free Persons, did commit & were the Perpetrators of a most Horrid & Cruel Robbery in the House of said Joseph Hastings, unmercifully abusing him the Joseph & Wife, carry away with them, in a felonious Manner a large Sum of Gold & Silver Coin, with sundry Garments of Clothes. *Reference to his Deposition filed will more fully appear. Ordered therefore that the said Leonard Turner, Thomas Thompson & Valentine Murren be bound over to the next Superior Court to be held for the District of Hillsborough on the first Day of April next then to be arraigned before the Judges of said Court in due

OCPQS 3/245: "Matthew Clinton's Negroe Will appeared to be decripped &c. Ordered that sd Matthew Clinton be exempt from Taxes for said Negroe."

OCPQS 3/625: "Ordered that a Molatto called Frank aged five years last November be Bound to Wm Aikles? until he arrive to full age." [It seems that Frank was a free person of color who was orphaned, which is why, although he is 'bound,' it is only until he is of age (i.e. 21)?]

OCPQS 3/422: "...poor Tax, to wit Thos Reed, Thos Aspy & a free Negroe Bazer which was allowed." [All of this was struck through in the original book.]

OCPQS 3/605-606: "Ordered that the Sheriff summon a Jury of good & lawfull men to divide and lay off the estate Real & personal of the Reverend Jno Debow deceased according to the Import of the Will. That is to say the Widow there part of the Land goods & Chattels (Books excepted) to be valued & the Children part of the Estate, which will be the remaining two thirds to be put into the possession of the Reverend Jacob Lake, who will sell all the perishable part according to Law, Hire out the Negroes & Rent the Land."

OCPQS 4/210: “On motion of Wm Hooper esq by Jesse Benton his Atty that the said Wm Hooper’s Negroe a Slaves, called John be allowed by this Court to hunt with & carry a gun on the said Wm Hooper plantation and Tract of Land, Scituate on or near Enoe, about two miles below Hillsbo., for purpose of preserving[?] the said Wm Hooper’s Stock & to hile[?] game for his family. Ordered that the said negroe John be allowed to carry a gun on his master’s land, agreeable to the said motion.”

OCPQS 4/506: “November 26, 1793. At a Called Court for the Trial of a Negroe Slave Jack the Property of Absalom Tatom esquire. Present three Justices & four free holders who were Summoned to attend, proclamation being made by the Sheriff for the presentment to appear, none appearing he is therefore discharged.”

OCPQS 4/517: “At a Called Court for the Trial of a Negroe Woman Tamer the Proeprty of Andrew Burke esquire. Present Sterling Harris, Wm McCauley & Jas Christmas Esquires and free free holders present. It appearing to the Court that the said Negroe Woman Tamer is not guilty of the charge brought against her, its therefore Ordered that she be discharged & c.”

OCPQS 4/534: “On motion of William Cain: Ordered that the chairman grant a Certificate to Negro Sampson the property of said Cain to carry a Gun agreeably to act of assembly on the Lands of William Cain, adjoining his manor plantation & he the said Cain enters into Bond with Richd Bennehan agreeably to Law.”

OCPQS 4/534: “On motion of Richard Bennehan Ordered that the chairman grant a certificate to Negrow Daniel on his Brickhouse plantation, Frank on his Quarter plantation, Ned at his store to carry Guns agreeably to act of assembly on said D___ he the said Bennehan entering into Bond agreeably to Law.”

OCPQS 4/535: “Ordered by the court that the several Guns taken by the partolers of St Maries district from the Negroes of Richd Bennehan & Wm Cain & others be returned to the said Bennehan & Cain & others &c.”

OCPQS 4/535: “On motion of Walter Alves esquire, Ordered that Negroe Peter have leave to carry a Gun on his plantation on Little river on entering into Bond with John Hogg Security in the sum of One hundred pounds. Ordered that the Chairman grant him a certificate agreeably to Law &c.”

OCPQS 4/543: “On motion Ordered that Laban Taban a free Mullattoe boy now in Custody of the Gaoler be hired out to the highest bidder from this day to Christmas next for the purpose of paying his prison charges, subject to be demanded by the court and the person having to [be] liable for the time the boy may be with him.”

OCPQS 4/554: “Ordered that the Perishable property of William Courtney Junr deceased be sold with one Negroe Girl named Rachel be sold &c.”

OCPQS 4/584: “At a Court Summoned by the Sheriff and held at the Court house in Hillsborough on Wedensday the 16th July, 1794 for the purpose of trying a Negroe man slave named Moses, the property of William Mangom of Guilford Courty committed to the District Gaol on suspicion of being accessory in breaking the Store of Hardress Hawkins Esquire of Orange County, Present the Worshipfull John Taylor, William Lyttle, William Watters & Wm F Strudwick, Esqs. Abner Bruce Benton Clerk of the Court of Orange being absent, John Hogg is appointed to act as Clerk to this Court in his room and stead. Barnabas Burrows being Sworn deposed to notice of the trial being given to William Mangom the owner of Moses agreeable to Law. Mosses the Negroe Slave being brought into Court is charged in the Mittimus and pleads not Guilty. No persons appearing to prove the charge against him, the prisoner is discharged on paying the Costs and Gaol fees. John Taylor, W Watters, Wm Lytle.”

OCPQS 4/605: “It appearing to this Court that Laban Tabors is a free Mullatto and an apprentice bound by Granville Court Court to David Bradford formerly of Granville but since the binding moved to Rowan County and that it being alleged his master had used him Ill, and the said apprentice being now in Gaol as a runaway, this Court doth Order that he be sent to Granville County Court which bound him out the said apprentice be delivered into the hand of sureties on their giving Security by Recognisance before Absalom Tatom or John Hogg Esquires or either of them for the personal appearance of the said apprentice at the next county Court of Pleas and quarter Sessions to be held for Granville, and that the said Recognisance be taken in the Sum of 80L after paying his prison fees &c.”

OCPQS 4/621: “Ordered that the Sheriff of Orange County Hire out a Negroe Mulatto boy by name of Laban Taban now in Jail to the highest Bidder until next Court, which boy to be hired this evening.” [Nov 1794]

OCPQS 5/16: “Ordered that Martha Nale & Sarah Neale Admrs of Robert Nate decd have leave to sell such of the Negroes and other personal estate of the sd Robert as the sd Admnrs may in their disretion think fit in order to pay the Debts and make due distribution and division of the said estate they giving Notice and conducting themselves in ther premises according to the act of the Genl Assembly in such case made and provided.” May 1795.

OCPQS 5/36: “The State v. Isaac A Negroe Slave, the property of Wm Lytle Esq} …Africa a Negroe man slave the property of Wm Courtney & Silvia a woman Slave the property of Jno Holden? Sworn on behalf of the State…Guilty in manner and form as charged in the accusation.” Aug 1795.

OCPQS 5/37: “James Rogers is Exempted from paying a poll tax for a Negroe slave named Hannah.” Aug 1795.

OCPQS 5/38: “ State v. Isaac, a Negroe man the property of Wm Lytle} Pet Larceny. It is ordered by the Court that the sd Negroe man Isaac be taken to the public whipping post between the hours of 5 & 7 in the afternoon of this day there receive 39 lashes on his bear back well laid on and that Sheriff of Orange carry this order into Execution.” Aug 1795.

OCPQS 5/51: “Ordered that the administrator or Administratrix of the Estate of Wm Courtney Deceased or either of them have leave to sell Negro Charles in order to pay a debt due Herbert Heans?...to advertise according to Law.” Nov 1795.

OCPQS 5/150: “Ordered that Charity Rebel Revil daughter of Peggy Revil of the age of three years 1st day of March next be bound to And. Brooks until she arrive to the age of Lawful age agreeable to act of Assembly.” Nov 1796.

OCPQS 5/177: “On motion of Wm Duffy Esq Atty for James Mebane Jun ordered that Robert Faucit & John Taylor exrs of James Armstrong Decd appear at this Term on Saturday & shew cause wherefore Cisero a negroe man late of the estate of the sd James Armstrong Decd who is now going at larges should not be sold for the benefit of the estate of sd James Armstrong Decd. The above sale enlargd[?]”

OCPQS 5/229: “Ordered that Jethro Pettiford a free boy of Colour about the age of seventeen years who it appears has been brought into this County & offered for sale by a certain Adam Marley as a Slave & who has been some time in the care & charge of Wm Partin, Be now delivered ____ the said Wm Partin to Patience Pettiford the Mother of the said boy of Nash County.” May 1797.

OCPQS 5/321: “Marchel Roberts & others v. James Johnston} Detincee?...Find that the Deft does detain the Negroes declared for, that the Plff is not barred by the Stat Lim & find that Ester is of the value of L200, that Moses is of the Value of L200, that Ellick of the Value of L200 & Betsy of the Value of L200 & ases the Plff’s damages to 6d & costs.” Nov 1797.

OCPQS 5/409: “In the matter of Sam a Mulatto man son of Rachel formerly the property of William Freeman late of Bertie County deceased on Petition of Francis Child & Mary Doherty Children & Representatives of the said William Freeman decd/ On hearing the Petition of the said Frances and Mary, praying that the said Sam a Mulatto man now residing in the County of Orange, son of Rachel a Mulatto Woman formerly the Slave of the said William Freeman deceased be set free. It being duly proved and made to appear to the satisfaction of this court that the said Mulatto woman Rachel mother of the said Mulatto man Sam had performed meritorious Services to her fomer Master the said William Freeman deceased, and that he had in consequence thereof left her and all her Children free and clear from bondage and Slavery for ever by his last will and Testament & it being also proved that the said Sam is the son of the said Rachel and thereby entitled to his Freedom & also that Robert Freeman the son of ths said William Deceased had due and legal notice that application would be made at the present Term of this Court for the liberation of the said Mulatto man, It is ordered and adjudged by the Court that the said Neg Mulatto man Sam be set free and liberated from all Bondage and Slavery whatsoever and he is licensed by this Court to go at large as a free man with all the Rights and privileges belonging to a freeman of Colour and that he shall be known by the name of Samuel Freeman.” May 1798.

OCPQS 5/414: “Ferabee Fosset widow v. The Exrs of Jno Fosset Decd & others} On hearing the petition & the answer of the Executors by which it appears that the personal property of the deceased (not including the Negroes Jane & Betsey) has been disposed of in the discharge of the debts of the deceased, and it appearing further that the said two Negroes have been approased by William Lytle & Wm Strayhorn according to the direction of the Will, and it also appearing that the petitioner has received the bed & furniture & the crockery ware bequeathed her in the Will, and the Value of the Ench & child the aforesaid Jane & Betsey amounting by the appraisement aforesaid to one hundred and forty pounds, It is therefore ordered & decreed by the Court by and with the consent of the Parties That the petitioner shall receive from the said Executors (Defendants) the sum of forty six pounds thirteen shillings & four pence being the one third part of the Valuation of the sd ___ which shall be a full discharge of all her claims on the personal Estate of her late husband the said Jno Fosset, she giving bond to refund a ratiable part in case Debt hereafter appear & property sufficient should not be left in the ___ of the Executors to discharge them persuing the directions of the ___ of the Genl Assembly in that case provided, and the petitioner shall be at liberty on tendring such Bond to take ____ for the said Sum of L46.13.4 against the said Executors de bene propriis – and the question of dower is reserved.” May 1798.

OCPQS 5/453: “State of North Carolina v. A Negro Man Bob, the property of Wm Hunt of Granville County} Ind’t. Charged with having froken & entered the dwelling house of Sam’l Dick of Orange County & stole therefrom certain goods the property of the said Samuel Dick as exhibited in the Said Charge. Pleads not Guilty…Find the Negro Bob abovementioned guilty in manner & form as set forth in the Charge. They further find that Wm Hunt the Owner of the said Negro Bob has in all respects Treated him as a kind Master and further find the said Negro to be of the Value of L200.” Aug 1798.

OCPQS 5/458: “The State v. Negro Bob the property of Wm Hunt of Granville County} Charged & found Guilty of breaking open entering into & taking from the house of Samuel Dick certain Goods of the property of the said Samuel. Being brought to the Bar, received the following Sentence, to wit, That he Bob be taken to the public Whipping post & there receive thirty nine Lashes well laid on his bare back that each of his Ears be nailed to the Pillory & cut off & that he be branded on each Cheek with the brands usual on those Occasions – and that the Sheriff of Orange carry this Sentence into Execution between the hours of 12 & 2 o’clock on this day.” Aug 1798.

OCPQS 5/549: “Ordered that a free Negroe boy called & known by the name of Moses of the age of 16 years some time in this month be bound unto John Bullock til he arrive to full age until to learn the art & mistery of a Potter.” Aug 1798.

OCPQS 5/494: “On reasons shewn the Court Jno Justice is discharged from his Recognisance as the reputed father of Ann Asque Bastard child begotten on the body of Ann Asque which child is born & proved to the Court to be a molattoe Child.” Nov 1798.

OCPQS 5/564: “Ordered that John the son of free Mary now of the age of Twelve years Aug next be bound to William Horton until he arrive to lawful age to learn the Art & Mystery of a Carpenter.” May 1799.

OCPQS 5/623: “Francis Child & Mary Doherty v. Robert Freeman} Petition. Ordered that Rachel, Suckey & Billey mentioned in the said petition be & remain in the possession, care, sutody & power of Mary Doherty until a final hearing & determination of the said petition.” Nov 1799.

OCPQS 5/632: “On motion ordered that Henry Edwards, William Forsyth, John Edwards, Isham Thrift & Charles Christmas be & they are hereby appointed as Commissioners to divide the Negro Slaves of Nathaniel Robinson decd among the Representative of said Nathaniel.” Nov 1799.

OCPQS 5/636: “On Motion, Ordered that Richard Simson, Zepheniah Tate & Asirias Graves be and they are hereby appointed to lay off the Negroes of Zacheus Tate Decd in Lotts as nearly equal as possible…Which said Lotts are to be drawn for in their presence by the Children of the said late Zacheus & a fair statement of the procedure of those hereby appointed is to be returned to the next County Court.” Nov 1799.

OCPQS 5/658 & 659: “In the matter of Rachel a molatto woman, Billy her son and Sukey her daughter, molattoes formerly the property of Wm Freeman late of Bertie County decd, on the petition of Frances Child widow, and Mary Doherty widow, children & representatives of the said Wm Freeman Decd, petitioners against Robert Freeman Defendant. On hearing the petition of said Frances & Mary, praying the said Rachel, Billy & Sukey now residing in the County of Orange, formerly slaves of the said Wm Freeman Decd be set free. It being duly provd & made appear to the Satisfaction of this Court that the said Molatto Woman Rachel, mother of the said Molatto children Billy & Sukey has performed meritorious services to her master, the said William Freeman Decd and that he had in sonsequence thereof, left her and all her children clear & free from bondage & slavery forever by his last Will & testament duly executed & provd. And the said Rachel being indentified by proof and ths aid Billey & Sukey shewn to be her children, and thereby entitled to freedom. And Robert Freeman son of the said William Decd and Executor of him the said William’s last will and testament, having been duly served with a Copy of the petition, and having apprised thereto by his council, & having failed to answer thereto the same ___ heretofore taken pro cpnfesso and appointed to be heard at this Term Ex parte, and the said Robert also now failing to put in his answer or shew any cause, It is ordered, adjudged & declared by this Court now that the said Molatto woman Rachel hath performed meritorious services toward her master, the said William Freeman & that she the said Rachel & her children, the said Billy & Suky, [659] be set free & liberated from all bondage & slavery whatsoever and they & each of them are licined by the Court to go at large as free persons with all the rights and privileges belonging to free persons of colour, and that they shall be known by the names of Rachel Joel, Billy Joel & Sukey Joel and that the Defendant Robert Freeman pay the full costs of the Suit.” Feb 1800.

And it further appearing to the Court that the said Slave Sally has had Issue Jesse, Jim, Patsey and Betsey, in consideration of all which the Court doth order, adjurdge and decree that the said Slaves be emancipated, liberated from Slavery and set free in as full and complete a manner as this Court hath power by law to emancipate the said Slaves, and that hence forward they be called and known by the names of George Tatom, Cate Tatom, Jack Tatom, George Tatom the younger, Sally Tatom, Jese Tatom, Jim Tatom, Patsey Tatom and Betsey Tatom, with all the rights and priviledges of free born Negroes. Whereupon Will Kirkland, David Ray and Duncan Cameron three and a majority of the Trustees named in the Will of the said Absolam Tatom decd entered into & acknowledged a Bond according to law for indemnifiying the Courty from becoming charged with the maintenance or support of the said Persons or either of them.” Aug 1809.

OCPQS 8/361: “The State v. Negro Sam} Information – Burglary…Find the Prisoner Sam not Guilty of the Felony & Burglary as charged but Guilty of Grand Larceny. The Prisoner Sam being brought to the Bar and being asked by the Court why Sentence of death should not be passed upon him, he prays the benefit of Clergy, which is extended to him by the Court. The Court therefore Ordered that he be brought to the Bar of the Court and then be branded on the brown [?] of the left Thumb with the Letter T and that the Sheriff of Orange County carry this Sentence into Exceution, and that the prisoner stand committed until the Costs are paid.” May 1812.

OCPQS 9/48: “The State v. Benjamin}…Ordered that the Sheriff Summons George a negro Slave the property of D____ Varning to give evidence on Tomorrow in behalf of the State.” May 1815.

OCPQS 9/55: “The State v, Benjamin a Negro Slave the property of Nicholas Atkins}…find the Defendant not Guilty of the felony as charged with Bill of Indt. It is adjudged that the Witnesses whose names are enclosed on the Bill of Indictment were material & necessary on behalf of the State.” May 1815.

OCPQS 9/92: “On Motion and cause shown it is Ordered that Isaac Weaver a boy of Color now about eighteen years old who was heretofore bound by this Court to Edward Harris be & he is removed from the power & authority of the said Edward Harris and is release & discharged from further obedience to the Orders of the said Edward Harris & of ___ his Service.” Aug 1815.

OCPQS 9/95: “Ordered that Abel Rainey Coroner be allowed five pounds for holding an Inquest on the body of a Negro Slave the property of William Wallace.” Aug 1815.

OCPQS 9/111: “James Webb v. John McDaniel}…Being impaneled by Consent find that Defendant doth detain the Negroe Boy Lewis mentioned in the Plaintiffs Declaration, that he is of the Value of five hundred Dollars & assess the plaintiffs Damages to ten Dollars & Costs.” Nov 1815.

OCPQS 9/122: “Hawkins Stroud v. Richard Thompson}…find that the Defendant does detain the Negro Boy Stephen and within three Years that the said Negro of the Value of One hundred ^ fifty pounds, that there is no release and asses the plaintiffs damages to 6d & costs.” Feb 1816.

OCPQS 9/168: “On Motion It is Ordered that the Executors of Benjamin Rainey decd have leave to sell Six other of the Negroes belonging to the said Estate for the purpose of paying debts.” May 1816.

OCPQS 9/176: “The State v. Negro Jim} William Horner a witness Summoned in behalf of the State being called by the Sheriff but failing to appear according to the Subpoena served on him is fined according to act of assembly.” May 1816.

OCPQS 9/179: “The State v. Jim alias James the property of Thomas Snipes Excr}…Find the Prisoner at the Bar Jim alias James Guilty of the House Breaking Larceny & Felony in manner & form as charged in the bill of Indictment. Remanded.” May 1816.

OCPQS 9/181: “Burk Walker who having been confined in the Jail of this County on a charge of being accessory to the crime committed by Negro Jim being brought into Court and Surety for his good behavior being required by Samuel Couch, It is Ordered by the Court that he be confined in the Jail of this County until he give sufficient Sec’y.” May 1816.

OCPQS 9/189: “The State v. Negro Jim alias James} Convicted at this Term for House Breaking, Larceny & felony. Ordered that the Sheriff being the body of the said Negro Jim alias James into Court for the purpose of passing having sentence passed & rendering Judgment in his Case conviction. The Sheriff having brought the prisoner into Court to the Bar of the Court is -. The secntence of the Court is that the said Negroe Jim be taken from hence to the place from whence he came and from thence to the place of Execution and there be hung by the neck until he be dead. And that the Sheriff of Orange carry this sentence into effect on the twenty eighth day of June next between the Hours of 12 and 4 ofclock of that day. Thomas Snipes esq. as Owner of the Negro Jim alias James and Executor of the last weill & Testament of William Ramsey dec’d defended this said Negro. Appeal prayed & granted by the prisoner at the Bar the said Jim alias James & also by Thomas Snipes the Owner of said Slave which is granted by the Court and the said Prisoner at the” May 1816.

OCPQS 9/209: “It is Ordered by the Court that William Cain jr. who administered on the Estate of John Cain deceased according to law make sale of the perishable part of said Estate & also the Negroe Slaves for the purpose of paying Debts and making distribution – excepting such Slaves as are engaged in the crop on the Intestates Eno plantation, & such stock & crop & utensils as may be necessary in his opinion for the use of __st plantation during this year.” May 1816.

OCPQS 9/242: “On motion Ordered that William Barbee, Pleasant Henderson, Thomas H Taylor, Bryan Kittrell & Edward Robson or any four of them be and are appointed Commissioners to aid and assist the Administrator of David Craig dec’d in appraising allotting & distributing the Negroes of his intestate among the Children of said intestate to wit Polley Craig, Sarah Craig, Elizabeth Craig and Alexander Russell administrator of John Craig dec’d and report to next Term.” Aug 1816.

OCPQS 9/247: “Ordered that William J Cain admr of John Cain dec’d have leave to sell the remaining Negroes and personal Estate belonging to said dec’d.” Aug 1816.

OCPQS 9/295: “Ordered that Fredrick Blanshard admr have leave to sell a Negro Girl the property of Nancy Outlaw Dec’d.” Feb 1817.

OCPQS 9/308: “Ordered that Elizabeth Revill a free Girl of Color now about the age of 16 years be bound to Simon Davis until she arrives to lawful age to [learn] the art & mystery of a Spinster. [note in marge:] Indenture made out.” Feb 1817.

OCPQS 9/309: “Ordered that a Summons issue to James Forsyth that he bring into the next Court a Colored Boy heretofore bound to him called John Whittaker and show Cause wherefore the Indenture should not be Cancelled and that the Sheriff take Bond & Sec’y in the Sum of L250 of said Forsyth to be void on Condition that he does produce said Boy according to the Order.” Feb 1817.

OCPQS 9/328: “John Oneal v. Mary Lloyd}…find that the Defendant doth detain the Negro Girl Slave Alsy [hard to read that name] mentioned in the plaintiffs declaration and doth detain her within three Years, that she is of the Value of Two hundred & fifty pounds and assess the plaintiffs Damages to L10 & costs.” May 1817.

OCPQS 9/358: “It appearing to the Court Joseph Woody to whom Zedkiah Husbands a boy of colour was heretofore bound hath removed from this County, It is therefore ordered that said Zedekiah Husbands be bound to John Crawford to learn the art & mystery of a farmer. The said Zedkiah Husbands having been produced to the Court.” May 1817.

OCPQS 9/395: “On Motion of William Smith Administrator of Tobias Smith dec’d, Ordered that the said William Smith sell all of the personal estate of the said Tobias Smith including two Slaves, they being the only Slaves of the estate and there being four distributees.” Aug 1817.

OCPQS 9/404: “George Simms a man of Color having been who was heretofore committed to the Jail of this County on Suspiecion of his being a runaway Slave, having been brought into Court and the Court being Satisfied that he is a free Man it is Ordered that he be discharged from his Imprisonment upon his taking the Oath prescribed for the relief of Insolvent Debtors. Whereupon the said George took the said oath and was discharged accordingly.” Aug 1817.

OCPQS 9/423: “It appearing to the Court that for the purpose of distributing the Negro Slaves belonging to the Estate of William Rainey dec’d a Sale of the said Slaves should be made by the administrators of said Estate, It is Ordered that Michael Holt and John King the administrators of the Estate expose to Sale the said Negro Slaves.” Nov 1817.

OCPQS 9/441: “Ephraim Cain represents to the Court that he is desirous[?] that a ___ should be granted to a Negro Slave of his named Sam to sarry a Gun upon his plantation on Eno in said County, said Cain has no white overseer on said plantation but the same is superintended by the said Slave and crop is ___ded thereupon, nor has any other slave obtained license to carry a Gun on said plantation. It is therefore Ordered that a license be granted to the said Cane for the said Sam to carry a Gun on said Plantation the said Caine giving bond & Security according to Law.” Nov 1817.

OCPQS 9/469: “Ordered that William Revill now of the Age of 19 years be bound to John Wilson until he arrives to lawful age to learn the art & mystery of a Carpenter.” Feb 1818.

OCPQS 9/470: “Ordered that a Notice issue to Simon Davis to whom Salley Revill a free Girl of Color was heretofore bound, to appear at next Term to show Cause why the Indenture should not be rescinded. [Something else possibly about binding her to John Taylor instead, but it is crossed out and very difficult to read.]” Feb 1818.

OCPQS 9/487: “Ordered that the Indenture binding to Polly Comb a free Girl of Colour named Nancy Whitaker be cancelled, and that the said Girl be bound to Henry Thompson Junr until she arrives to lawful age to learn the ar & mystery of a Spinster, she being now abou the age of 13 years.” Feb 1818.

OCPQS 9/513: “Ordered that John Faddis Coroner be allowed Six Pounds for holding an Inquest on the body of a negro man Slave the property of Sarah Scarlett, and that the County Trustee pay the same.” May 1818.

OCPQS 9/515: “Ordered that William R Robinson Admr of William Robinson dec’d have leave to sell two negroes viz Major & Leah upon a credit of at least six months belonging to the Estate of said dec’d for the purpose of paying Debts.” May 1818.

OCPQS 9/520: “Whereas it appears to the Court that Robert McCrory died possessed of one Slave only, a woman by the name of Hannah and that a division of his personal property cannot be conveniently made without the sale of the said Slaves. Therefore ordered that James Hutcheson administrator of the said Robert McCrory sell the said Slave at public sale at twelve months creit taking Bond with good Security for the purchase money.” May 1818.

OCPQS 9/526 & 527: “Whereas it is represented to this Court that Samuel Strudwick had whipped one of his Slaves by wh__ whipping & he afterwards died, It is thereupon Ordered by consent of the Solicitor General Edward Jones that recognizance be taken for the appearance of said Samuel Strudwick at the next Superior Court to answer for the Killing of said Negro. Whereupon Paoli Ashe, Richard Ashe & John Taylor Esqs entered into recognizance in the Sum of L500 for his appearance.” May 1818.

OCPQS 9/553: “Ordered that the Admr of Abram Allen Dec’d have leave to sell the perishable property & Negroes belonging to the Estate of Abram Allen dec’d.” May 1818.

OCPQS 9/568: “Ordered that John Faddis Coroner be allowed five pounds for holding an Inquest on the Body of Bella a Negro late the property of Samuel Strudwick. [Note in Margin:] Order issued to John Faddis 9th March 1819.” Aug 1818.

OCPQS 9/571: “Ordered that Joseph Latta Admr of John Latta Dec’d have leave to sell the Negroes Dilcey and Pleasant & others of the Salves necessary for the purpose of paying the debts.” Aug 1818.

OCPQS 10/15: “Ordered that the Sheriff produce to this Court a Mulatto Girl names Elizabeth Revill heretofore bound so Simon Davis and that he give notice to said Cimon Davis that he appear before this Court immediately to shew Cause why the Indenture shall not be rescinded.” Nov 1818. This immediately followed by a similar order regarding a white boy named Jesse Harvey also bound to Simon Davis.

OCPQS 10/21: “The Sheriff having produced into Court Elizabeth Revill a free Girl of Color heretofore bound to Simon Davis and it appearing to the Court that said Simon does not manage her in a proper Way, It is Ordered that the Indenture entered into by said Simon Davis be Cancelled and that said Elizabeth Revill be bound to Colo Wm Shepperd until she arrives to lawful age to learn the art & mistery of a Spinster. The said Shepperd enters into Bond with James Lapslie and James Hart Sec according to the act of Assembly.” Nov 1818.

OCPQS 10/64: “Ordered that the Administrator of Abram Allen dec’d be permitted to sell the Negroes belonging to the Estate of Abram Allen dec’d.” Feb 1819.

OCPQS 10/64: “Ordered that Thoams Bilbo Depuuty Sheriff be allowed Two Dollares & fifty Cents for bringing into Court a Free Girl of Colour & a white bound boy in possession of Simon Davis at November Term last and that the County Trustee pay the same.” Feb 1819. [Marginal note:] “Order delivered to Thos Bilbo 20th April 1819.”

OCPQS 10/144: “Ordered that the Administrators of John Hunt dec’d have leave to sell the perishable estate of said dec’d together with a Negro Man Slave called Abram.” Aug 1819.

OCPQS 10/185: “Ordered that William McCawley Administrator of the Estate of John Hunt dec’d have leave to sell all the Negro slaves belonging to the Estate of said dec’d for the payment of Debts & making division of said estate and to sell the same on a credit of not less than twelve months.” Nov 1819.

OCPQS 10/221: “Ordered that John Faddis, Coroner, be allowed the sum of five pounds for holding an Inquest on the body of an Infant child of a negro woman the property of David Allison Esq. and that the County Trustee pay the same.” Feb 1820.

OCPQS 10/226: “Ordered that Solomon Hathcock a boy of color now of the age of twelve years be bound to Alexander Morphis until he arrive to lawful age to learn the art & mystery of a farmer.” Feb 1820.

OCPQS 10/274: “James McDaniel to whom an apprentice by the name of Alexander Husbands was bound heretofore produced said Husbands before the Court. On motion ordered that said McDaniel be discharged from the condition of the bond which he gave at the time said apprentice was bound.” May 1820. Note that the race of Alexander Husbands is not given here, but based on the last name I believe he was likely a person of color. It appears that Alexander and Zedekiah Husbands both lived in what is now southern Alamance County on the west side of the Haw River (because the men to whom they were at various points bound (McDaniel, Woody and Crawford) were all members of families that lived in the vicinity of Marys Creek.

OCPQS 10/317: “Ordered that Notice Issue to Robert Eaton to appear at the next Term of this Court to show cause why Susanna Revill a Girl of Colour heretofore bound to him should not be removed.” Aug 1820.

OCPQS 10/327: “Ordered that James Wells son of Prudence Wells a Woman of Colour of the age of thirteen years be bound to Reuben Day until he arrives to lawful age to learn the art & mystery of a Shoemaker.” Aug 1820.

OCPQS 10/428: “Ordered that John Hathcock a boy of Colour of the age of Nine years be bound to John McDaniel until he arrives to lawful age to learn the Art & mystery of a Farmer. Bond given & Indenture signed.” Feb 1821.

OCPQS 10/431: “Ordered that Thomas Burnet a Boy of Color Son of Milley Burnet be bound to Thomas Davis until he arrive to lawful age to learn the art & mistery of a farmer. now of the age of Eighteen years.” Feb 1821.

OCPQS 10/461: “Rose Sears v. Merritt & Coulter}…find the Negro Slave Daniel was of the proper[?] Goods & chattels of William Sparrow in the prlea mentioned and was before bringing of this suit duly sold to the Defendant William H Merritt & thereby became his property and that he is not the property of the plaintiff. Assess $40 damages for detention of the Slave by the plff Rose Sears and that Court adjudges that the said Defendants have a return of said slave [illegible] & [illegible] the said Damages & costs of Suit…” May 1821.

OCPQS 10/477: “Ordered that the Sheriff of Orange County sell at public Sale for Cash a Negro Man called John committed to the Jail of said County as a Runaway according to act of Assembly passed in the year 1818.”

OCPQS 10/477: “Ordered that Thomas Thompson the Guardian of Mary H Milleson a Lunatic have leave to sell a negro man Slave Washington the peroperty of his Ward and that he sell him on a Credit of Six Months for the purpose of discharging Debt contracted for her maintenance & for he better maintenance hereafter.” May 1821.

OCPQS 10/478: “Ordered that the Administrator of William Walker dec’d have leave to sell all the personal estate of said Deceased including the Negroes.” May 1821.

OCPQS 10/510: “Ordered that John Faddis Coroner be allowed Ten Dollars for holding an Inquest over the body of a negro Slave the property of John Pugh and that the County Trustee pay the same.” Aug 1821.

OCPQS 10/541: “Ordered that the administrator of Archer Harris Dec’d have leave to sell the perishable Estate of said Dec’d & also Six Slaves viz America, Ben, Isham, Dilce, Sall & Tamer on a Credit of 12 months.” Nov 1821.

OCPQS 10/551: “Ordered that Hall Garrison Administrator of the estate of William Brown dec’d have leave to sell two negro Slaves belonging to said estate for the purpose of making distribution.” Nov. 1821.

OCPQS 10/556: “Ordered that John Evans a boy of Colour the son of Polly Evans a white woman dec’d of the age of ten years be bound to Isaac Jackson carpenter until he arrives to lawful age to learn the art & mystery of a Carpented to learn him to read & write & cypher as far as the rule of three and at the end of his service to give him a set of Carpenters Tools worth $100.” Nov 1821.

OCPQS 10/559: “Ordered that the Sheriff of Orange County sell for ready money a runaway slave named Cobb after advertising the same for three months agreeably to the act of 1818 in such case made & provided and that advertisement be made in the Hillsboro Recorder.” Nov 1821.

OCPQS 10/595: “Ordered that the Sheriff of this County produce to this Court at the next Term Charles Drew [overwritten ‘Griffis’] son of Betsey Drew a coloured woman.” Feb 1822.

OCPQS 11/82: “Ordered that Zachariah Herndon Amr of Wm Rhodes dec’d sell the Negro Slaves the property of said Estate at public sale for a credit of twelve months & on giving twenty days public notice.” Nov 1822.

OCPQS 11/90: “Ordered that the Sheriff of this County take up the Negro Slave Allick the property of Doct’r John Umstead & him safely secure so that he bring said Negro Slave before the next Term of this Court & that said Sheriff give Notice to the Owner of said Slave at least ten days before the next Term.” Nov 1822.

OCPQS 11/90: “Ordered that the Sheriff of this County take up the Negro Slave Jacob the property of Jane Nelson & him safely secure so that he have said Negro Slave before the next Term of this Court & that said Sheriff give Notice to the Owner of said Slave at least ten days before the next Term.” Nov 1822.

OCPQS 11/91 & 92: “Thomas D Watts Esquire the Sheriff of Orange County brings ___ into Court the body of William Johnston a free man of colour and says to the Court that his informed that the said William Johnston came into this State sive the year 1795 and that finding him since the last Term of this Court in the said County, he applied to the said William Johnston to give him a Bond and Security payable to the Governor of this State in the sum of Two hundred pounds conditioned for his good behaviour during the time he shall remain in this State and that the said William refused to give such bond. Whereupon the said Sheriff says that he arrested the body of the said William and took him into his custody until this day and now has his body here to be disposed of by the Court according to Law. And the Court here diects a Jury to be impaneled to enquire whether the said William Johnston is such a free person of colour as comes within the meaning & purview of the act of the General Assembly passed in the year 1795 & entitled an Act to Prevent any person who may emigrate from any ___ the West India or Bahama Island, of the French, Dutch or Spanish Settlemetns on the Southern coasts of America from bringing Salves into this State and ___ for imposing certain restrictions on free persons of color who may hereafter come into this State…[the jury] do say and find that the said William Johnston is such a free person of color as does come within the meaning & purvies of the said Act of Assembly. And therefore it is considered by the Court that the said William Johnston shall give a bond with Security in the sum of two hundred pounds payable to Gabriel Holmes Governor of this State, and his succsessors in office for the use of the State with condition to be void if the said William Johnston shall be of good behavior during the time he shall remain in this State. And it is further considered by the Court that if the said William Johnston fail to give such bond within ten days hereafter that the Sheriff of Orange County shall sell him at Public Auction for ready money after twenty days notice for the benefit of this State. And afterwards the said William Johnston in open Court enters into Bond agreeably to the Judgment of the Court with Josiah Turner as his security, and thereupon the said William is discharged without ___.” Nov 1822.

OCPQS 11/113: “John McMurray v. Mrs. Frances Child} Detinue…find that the Defendant does detain the negro Lucy mentioned in the Plffs declaration of the value of $000. That she doth also detain the Negro Nancy mentioned in the said Declaration of the value of $400. And assess the plaintiff’s damaged to 5 cents.” Feb 1823.

OCPQS 11/245: “The State v. Simon White} Ordered that a Capias issue to the Sheriffs of Orange & Chatham to take the body of negro slave Jimi the property of Simon White and to have him here at the next term of this Court. OCPQS 11/577: “Ordered that Andrew Hughs, Henry Hurdle & Benjamin Fielder be & they are hereby appointed Commissioners to divide certain Negro Slaves directed by the said will to be divided between Nancy the Widow of John John Brackin dec’d since intermarries with James Wilkerson and Julia Ann child of said Dec’d.” Feb 1826.

OCPQS 11/593: “Administration de bonis non with the Will annexed is granted to John J Freeland on the Estate of Mary Craig dec’d who enters into Bond with Thomas Hogan & Joseph Freeland Sec. in the sum of $800. Ordered that he have leave to sell a negro man by the name of James.” May 1826.

OCPQS 12/217: “Alfred Shambley came into Court & by his Counsel moved that the Indenture heretofore entered into by him whereby Litha Mayho a Colored Child be rescinded. Whereupon the Court Ordered & adjudged that the said Indenture be rescinded and the said Alfred Shambley be discharged from any further liability under said Indenture. Her surrendering to the [Court the] body of the said Litha Mayho who is bound to Joseph Laycock. OCPQS 12/317: “Ordered that the Order heretofore made ordering John Coles hand & Ephraim Brown, James Cole & William Whitted to work on the road leading from Wm Whitted’s lane to Holden’s Mill be rescinded, and that said hands work on the road from Dortch’s to William Jackson’s under James Turner Overseer. Also that Thomas Morgan’s hands, William Whitted & hands, John Cole & hands, Coy Revills hands, Daniel Lynch, Ephraim Brown, John Morgan, Elizabeth Holden’s hands, John Holden’s hands, Ester Doherty’s hands, Anthony Doherty work under said James Turner as overseer (order renewed).” Aug 1828. [Could Coy Revill be the same person referred to as Chia Revells in OCPQS 4/315, Nov 1790? Chia was about 12 in 1790, so he would have been about 50 in 1828.]

The Case coming on to be heard upon the petition the offer of Defendnat to submit to an accout, the Account and Exhibit. It appeared that the Estate of the deceased Isaac Patterson, which come ___hands of the Defendant David Patterson his administrator, exclusive of the Negro Slaves amount to…And it is Further ______d that the following Negro Slaves are in the Hands of the defendant belonging to the Estate of his Intestate & ready for distribution at the end of the present Year, to wit Charles, Stephen, Dinah, Ailse, Charlotted, Sarah, Mary, Isaac, Stephen (the Younger), Mary, Leny, Nathan, child not named. It is therefore Ordered & Decreed that as the Defendant has in his hands a Surplus of $250.45 each of the petitioners do recover from him one tenth therofr to wite $25.04…In like manner they will deduct from the share of William Patterson his advancement say $65.90 & his share of the Surplus in the Hands of the administrator say $25.04 and the balance of his share they will make up to him in the division of the Negro Slaves…[similar language with respect to other heirs of the estate]…” Nov 1828.

OCPQS 16/256: “Ordered that Sarah Day aged about 10 years a free person of Coulor daughter of Nicy Day be bound to John Turner (of Israel) who enters into bond in the sum of $500 with Andrew Turner & John J Freeland his Securities and that said Turner is to teach the said Sarah the art & mystery of a spinster.” Nov 1846.

OCPQS 16/257: “Rachel Sims & others – Petition to sell slaves. It is ordered by the court that Charles W Johnston heretofore appointed commissioner to sell certain negroes belonging to the estate of Herbert Sins, decd, be allowed $102.79 for his compensation as commissioner aforesaid for all his services to be deducted from the money collected by him, to wit, $1357 – and that the remainder of said money, to wit, the sum of $1254.21 be paid by hum to the Clerk of this Court and it is further ordered that the said Commissioner deliver over all the remaining bonds taken by him as commissioner aforesaid for the purchase money of the said Slaves to be retained by said Clerk until the further order of this Court.” Nov 1846. Same jury as in No 23 charged, who find that the defendant is a slave going at large & that he has hired his own time by permission of his maters. Whereupon the Court adjudges that the Sheriff of the County hire out the said Levi at public Vendue for the space of one year taking bond & security for the same payable to the State of North Carolina for the use of the poor of this County subject to the payment of the Costs & Charges of this suit & that he proceed forthwith to hire out said Slave.” Feb 1847.

John Y Dorch admr} Jury charged…the Jury find that there have been payments to the amount of ____ that there is no set off, That the Defdt has in his possession one negro girl of the estate of George Walker deceased subject to the plaintiff’s recovery & that he hath no further assets they further find the balance due on the bonds declared on to be $ ___ principal money & assess the plaintiff’s damages for interest to be $ ___. I also leave in trust with my Executors for the use and benefit of my daughter Isabella Moore one negro boy named Bob [or Babs?] to be hired out for her benefit or if they should think it best for her they may let her have the services of said boy herself during her natural life and her death to be sold and the proceeds of said sale to be equally divided among all the Children of my said daughter Isabella Moore. Also I give & bequeath unto my daughter Mary Jordan one negro boy named John, but to be kept in the hands of my Executors in trust and to be hired out by them for the use and benefit of my said daughter Mary Jordan or if my Executors should think it best they may let my said daughter Mary Jordan have the services of said boy during her natural life, and at her death the said boy to be sold…I also will that one negro woman named Nancy and her child Richard and all her future increase with all the balance of my stock of horses, Cattle, sheep and hogs not willed away hereby to be sold by my executors also all my wagons stills and farming utensils of every kind and all other property not heretofore disposed of in this will of every description to be sold by my executors except my negro man Isaac, which I give and bequeath unto my grand son son Andrew McBroom…” May 1849.

OCPQS 17/526: “Ordered that Jack Evans, son of Rilly Evans (a free woman of color) now of the age of about 7 years be bound to John Turner who enters into bond according to law with Andrew Turner & Joseph Allison his surities.” Aug 1850.

OCPQS 17/526: “Ordered that the Indentures heretofore made binding Harry Baldwin a boy of color to John Redman be rescinded & that said boy who is now about 17 years old be bound to Evans Turner to learn the are & mystery of a farmer. The said Evans Turner enters into bond according to law with Josiah Turner his surety.” Aug 1850.

OCPQS 17/532: “The State v. Patsey Huckabee & James Huckabee} Indt. Didorderly house. The following Jury charged…Who find the Defendants not Guilty.” Aug 1850.

OCPQS 17/551: “Ordered that Ellen Mitchell a free girl of color daughter of Eliza Mitchell aged 5 years last May be bound to Ann L Watson to learnt he art & mystery of of a Spinster. The said Ann L Watson enters into bond according to law with John Hutchins & John W Carr his sureties.” Nov 1850.

OCPQS 17/551: “Ordered that the County Attorney ascertain what can be made out of any property of the owners of the slave Aleck recently executed for a Capital felony towards the payment of costs of said prosecution and if none can be so made, to ascertain what amount the County is responsible for and draw upon the County Trustee for said amount.” Nov 1850.

OCPQS 17/552: “Ordered that Henry Crabtree produce before this Court on Saturday next Term of this Court the boy of color named James Mayo who was bound to him at May Term 1849 & show cause why said binding shall not be rescinded.” Nov 1850.

OCPQS 17/579: “Henr Edwards & others v. John Edwards & Lindsey Edwards} Petition to Divide or Sell Slaves. Answer filed. Replicatio to answer. This case coming on to be heard on the Petition, andwer & exhibits, after argument of Counsel, it is ordered, adjudged & decreed by the Court that Thomas Brewer, Samuel Turrentine, Franklin Freeman, Spencer Durham, & Wilson Atwater be appointed Commissioners to divide & allot to, and among the Legatees of the late Herny Edwards Senr all the negroes of the estate of said Henry Edwards Sent except Moses who is in the hand of Henry Edwards Jr. & report under their oaths & hands & seals to the next Term of this Court.” Nov 1850.

OCPQS 17/611: “Ordered that William Mitchell (son of Adaline Mitchell, a free woman of Color) aged 14 years next May be bound to Henry Evans to learn the art & mystery of a Cabinet maker & to receive when free, if he serves out his time one set of bench tools & a good suit of clothes.” Mar 1851.

OCPQS 17/612: “Ordered by the Court that the order of this court made at February Term 1849 binding William Mayo a boy of Color to William Hobbs be rescinded & his bond cancelled. Ordered further that the order of this court made at May Term 1849 binding James Mayo a boy of color to Henry Crabtree be rescinded & his bond cancelled. And it is further ordered that the said William & James Mayo be bound to Dr. Edmund Strudwick who is to hire them out for the support of their grand father Manuel who is blond. The said Dr. Strudwick enters into two several bonds according to law with Henry K Nash & James Webb as his surities.” Mar 1851.

OCPQS 17/649: “Freeman Heath son of Sally Heath a boy of color aged Fourteen the 19th day of March last, be bound to James Ward to learn the art & mystery of a farmer. The sair Ward enters into bond in the sum of $500 with Joseph Allison his surety & James C Turrentine his surities.” May 1851.

OCPQS 17/666: “Ordered that Gray Barbee Senr be released from the payment of a double tax on 625 acres of land, one white & 10 black Polls for the year 1850. Satisfactory Cause being shown to the Court.” Aug 1851.

OCPQS 17/679: “Ordered that the County Trustee pay Dr Thomas Hogan Two dollars tax upon two black Polls improperly listed & paid by by him for the year 1850, Cause being shown to the court.” Aug 1851.

OCPQS 17/683: “Ordered that Wilis J Roberts’ tax list for the year 1850 be corrected so as to Charge him with one white Poll only & that the Sheriff refund him one dollar the amount of one black Poll improperly charged & paid by him.” Aug 1851.

OCPQS 17/686: “Abraham Plenty, a man of color, produced in open Court the following Paper writing which is ordered to recorded to wit: ‘City of Raleigh, Intendants office March 10th 136 [sic] Abraham Penty a free Person of color having produced to the board of Commissioners of the City of Raleigh Documents in proof of his Freedom, and satisfactory Testimony of his having supported a good character for industry & sobriety, is permitted to reside within the limits of this city while he shall continue to maintain an unexceptionable character or until this permit shall be revoked by this board. J O Stedman, Secretary. Jno Bell, Intendant of Police.” Aug 1851.

OCPQS 17/686: “Ordered that Sarah Morgan a free girl of color, aged about 18 years last February be bound to B L Durham who enters into bond in the sum of $500 with Joseph Allison and Richard M Jones his surities.” Aug 1851.

OCPQS 17/703: “Abner Parker admr & Lucy Young v Joseph Allison Guar pendente lite of Elizabeth & Frances Young} It is ordered by the Court that the order of last Court in this Case be rescinded so far as regards the slave Matilda.” Nov 1851.

OCPQS 17/711: “Ordered that James Evans a boy of color son of Lilly Evans aged 13 years the 12th day of February next be bound to Wm B Williams to learnt he art & mystery of a farmer. The said Williams enters into bond according to law with Henry H Blalock & Wm Lynn his surities.” Nov 1851.

OCPQS 17/711: “Ordered that Brink Evans son of Lilly Evans aged 11 years the 11oth day of march next be bound to William B Williams to learn the art & mystery of a farmer. The said Williams entering into bond according to law with Henry H Blclock & William Lynn his surities.” Nov 1851.

OCPQS 17/718: “Ordered that the County Trustee pay H M Scoggin a witness for the state against Frank a Slave & others in Orange Supr Court per ticket filed the sum of $2.50.” Nov 1851

OCPQS 17/718: “Ordered that the County Trustee pay J W Hancock a witness for the state against Frank a slave & others in Orange Supr Court per ticket filed the sum of $1.83 cents.”  Nov 1851.

OCPQS 17/719: “Ordered that the County Trustee pay B F Hancock a witness for the state against Frank a Slave & others in Orange Superior Court per ticket filed the sum of $1.83.” Nov 1851.
